Jason Carrillo

Jason Carrillo is the star of the high school basketball team and a closet homosexual. At the opening of the novel, Jason attends his first Rainbow Youth meeting to assure himself that he is not gay and simply confused. As the novel progresses, however, Jason can no longer deny the truth: he is gay, and he is falling in love with Kyle Meeks. For Jason, these realizations present many problems. First, he is terrified that coming out as gay will lose him his basketball scholarship. Second, he knows he must break up with his long-term girlfriend, whom he loves as a friend, and break her heart. The biggest problem is that Jason must tell his parents the truth, including his abusive, alcoholic father.
