Summary

On Sunday morning, it stops raining for the first time since Eben got sick and a rainbow fills the sky. That day, Holley speaks with one of Eben's doctors about the possibility of stopping treatment because Eben is now "beyond the limits of any reasonable expectation of recovery" (106). As Eben descends back into the Realm of the Earthworm's-Eye View, the faces emerging from the muck have changed and he can identify some of the faces as those of his loved ones who were present at his bedside on the last night and morning of his coma. The faces, in particular one of a young boy, tug at him, reminding him that there are people in another realm whom he loves and cares about. He realizes that this young boy needs him and that it is important that he return to him.
