Chapters 18-20 Summary and Analysis

In "Second Wife," five more years passed. Sultana gave birth to two daughters, then suffered a bought with breast cancer. The illness left Sultana in danger should she ever become pregnant again, so she underwent sterilization surgery. Shortly afterward, despite his assurances of love, Kareem told Sultana that he intended to take a second wife for the purpose of having more children. Sultana became enraged and told Kareem she would never allow that to happen. In "Escape," Sultana took her passport and a letter allowing her to travel that she forged and flew to Dubai where the children were attending a camp. From there, Sultana took a commercial flight to London. During that flight, Sultana met a woman who was from Lebanon. While living in Saudi Arabia the woman's daughter had been kidnapped and used as a kidney donor...
