Mia's Obsession with Prom

The most frequently recurring theme in this novel is Mia's obsession with prom. The novel begins with Shameeka and Mia discussing the fact that prom is only two weeks away and Michael still has not invited Mia. Mia cannot focus on her schoolwork because she does not understand why Michael has not yet invited her to prom. Lilly mocks Mia's obsession with such an antiquated dance ritual. Several of Mia's friends suggest that Mia should just ask Michael to prom, but she refuses because that is not nearly as romantic as Michael inviting her to prom. Tina suggests that Michael might ask Mia to prom on her birthday, and Mia begins to look forward to that possibility; however, her birthday passes without an invitation to prom, so at her birthday party several days later, Mia mentions prom to Michael while playing Seven Minutes in Heaven...
