Summary

The next morning, Skinner leaves Zou Lei for some exercise. When he returns, he finds she is gone but left all of her belongings. He goes upstairs and confronts Jimmy. The two get into a violent fight and Mrs. Murphy calls the police. Skinner is arrested.

Skinner is taken to the precinct where they refuse to listen to him about Jimmy. They take Skinner's things and put him in a cell. Finally, his arresting officer frees him after learning about Jimmy’s criminal record. Skinner hikes to Zou Lei’s apartment, but she is not there.

The author shifts back to Zou Lei just as Skinner leaves that morning. By 10 o’clock, she believes he has left her for good. Then, a man tells her to open the door. She refuses, but he unlocks it. An unnamed man comes in and shoves...
