Chapter 6, The Voice Summary

Following the successive deaths of both Tabitha and Lydia in the same year, Mrs. Wheelwright decides to get a television. TVs are not especially common in this day and age, and Johnny is the envy of Owen and his cousins. Both Johnny and Owen are curious as to what exactly is on TV, and Mrs. Wheelwright becomes immediately and completely addicted, both to watching it and criticizing it. Owen and Mrs. Wheelwright finally find common ground. They develop an undying and quite baffling admiration for a flamboyant piano performer called Liberace. This confuses Johnny, although Dan chalks it up to the "brute-stupid influence of Owen's parents." Dan is certain that once he begins his education at the Gravesend Academy, many of his eccentricities will begin to disappear. Mrs. Wheelwright follows up.....
