Astrid Ericsson Lindgren, daughter of a fanner, was born in Vimmerby, Sweden on November 14, 1907, the second of four children. Raised in the days before television, movies, or automobiles, she led a childhood filled with books, people, nature, and play with her brother and sisters.
In high school, Astrid, already gifted at creative writing, was told over and over that she would be an author someday.
Out of stubbornness and fear, and perhaps a lack of confidence in her writing ability, she vowed never to write books.
After completing high school, she moved to Stockholm where she learned secretarial skills and took an office job.
In 1931, she married Sture Lindgren and later became the mother of a son, Lars, and a daughter, Karin.
