Summary

Chapter 13 begins with the word “hija,” which means “daughter.” Maxine and Jade are supposed to spend an evening together, but Maxine cancels at the last moment. She then invites Jade to brunch to celebrate Jade's birthday. Mrs. Butler refuses to allow Jade to go, saying that she has not met Maxine and that Jade has chores to do. When Maxine arrives, Mrs. Butler says that Maxine should talk to her before making plans with Jade. Maxine apologizes to Mrs. Butler, then to Jade. Jade shows Maxine the newest piece she is working on, and Maxine is amazed.
