Summary

Mrs Pett was hosting a gathering with a mix of poets, Buddhists, interior decorators, stage reformers and painters. Ann’s father, Mr Chester, was spending a few days in New York prior to a trip to South America. He observed the party distastefully, remarking to Ann that he was glad to be leaving. He noticed Lord Wisbeach, asking Ann who he was. Ann told him Lord Wisbeach had proposed to her and she had been considering it. She told her father she had refused many proposals but that she liked Lord Wisbeach as he was different and commented that he and one other man had captured her interest, a man she had met on a ship.
