Summary

On the boat, Jimmy was dismayed at all the attention Ann had been receiving from other young men. He realized she was very popular and disliked the competition he was facing and the difficulty he had had in spending time with her. He encountered her on the deck during rough waters. He mentioned that he was thinking of being a newspaper man on arriving to America and Ann expressed her disapproval, telling him she had encountered one named Jimmy Crocker that had tainted her opinion of them.
