Canoe

The canoe is a symbol of the physical body. Pew sees his body as a container for himself that has no bearing on the sort of person he is. He says that people generally speak to the canoe, but they do not notice him inside. Pew notes the only person who looked past the canoe to acknowledge him was the attendant at the gas station.

Glass Eye

Paulina’s glass eye is a symbol of visual acuity. Paulina demonstrates her inability to see the world clearly when she tells Pew that her husband, Charles, died after becoming sick and that he never laid a hand on her to hurt her. Pew later learns that Charles is still alive but he was sent to a mental facility after he stabbed Paulina in the eye.
