Chapter 58: Jud wakes suddenly, startled by some noise. He calls himself a stupid old man when he realizes that he has slept till nearly dawn. He calls for Louis, but he knows somehow that the footsteps he hears don't belong to his friend. The smell enters as the door swings open. Church enters the room.
