Summary

In Chapter 2, Bitter works on the painting for three weeks. While she had been listening to a thrumming rap initially, she chooses softer music and even closes Jam out of the studio for a while. Jam wakes after midnight one night to discover “a weight thrumming through the floorboards” and “Bitter's feet singing the news” (21) that the painting is done. Jam slips up to the studio, intending to see the painting, but decides that “everything deserved some time … to figure out what they were” (22) and goes back to bed without seeing it. Two days later, she returns. She is surprised that the studio door does not creak, and she considers that the painting may be eaten up by that sound.
