Chapter 5 Summary

Anna and Kate were best friends starting in preschool. They continues to be best friends until ninth grade. At the time, Anna was overweight, had braces and wore glasses. When Anna's crush, Sam, bumps into her in the hall and calls her fat, Anna starts eating salads at lunch and loses 20 pounds by the end of the year. She goes away to stay with her aunt in Maine for the summer and Anna comes back without telling Kate she's back. At school, Anna pretends Kate doesn't exist and stops attending choir practice. Kate realizes their friendship is over when she goes into the bathroom to talk to Anna, Anna is there with Diane Mullins, a popular girl, and Anna pretends as if she doesn't even know who Kate is.
