Greed

In the beginning of the novel, Chee is called to the home of B.J. Vines, a wealthy man who made a uranium discovery early in the rush to develop uranium. Chee is asked to find a box that is very important to this man, but of whose contents no one is sure. Chee is not interested in taking the case, but begins to investigate it when several people warn him to stay away. At first it appears that the box was taken by the son of a peyote church chief because the son believes it contains bad luck that has led to his father's illness. However, Chee son begins to realize this belief in not true.

Chee begins looking in to the explosion at an oil rig that took place several years before B.J. Vines came to town. This explosion was ruled accidental, but the local sheriff has always believed...
