America

Patsy's imagination of what America is going to be like is largely based on American movies she has watched, such as Breakfast at Tiffany's. She imagines it as a land of opportunity, with lots of white, rich people, where loneliness doesn't exist. From the moment she touches down on American soil, Patsy is stunned with what she finds. America is a very hard place to live when you are an undocumented immigrant. She is astounded by the number of black and brown people she sees, and in particular the prevalence of people from the Caribbean. Particularly when she first enters America, Patsy enjoys observing the diversity of people living in New York City. She marvels at how some of the neighborhoods seem like they could be in Jamaica.
