Summary

In Chapter 25, things are tense in Tru's home after Marva lost the baby. There is a lot of silence between Roy and Marva, and this silence is also present when Tru goes to visit Mama G. Tru spends time alone thinking about Patsy's silence. One day, she witnesses some boys playing soccer in the lot near her house. She is jealous and wants to play with them. Tru spots a hidden makeshift soccer ball, like the ones the boys were using, and she begins to practice with it. As she practices, she hears her father's voice call out to her saying, "You have good force. But yuh need a target" (229). Tru is nervous at first, expecting Roy to be upset with her. However, she finds his expression has softened.
