Chapter 10 Summary

Despite everything that has happened, Hang still loves her mother. After Aunt Tam's banquet, she leaves the village with feelings of nostalgia. She returns to Hanoi and first sees her mother combing her hair. Que is a bit aloof but Hang hugs her and says she missed her and that no one could replace her. That night, Que sleeps in her daughter's arms. Hang is due to begin university in three days. She begins to make new friends with other university classmates. They are struggling to get the clothes and books they need while Hang has the privileges of her aunt's generosity. Que buys green and white polka dot Japanese cloth and has a Danish-style shirt made for Hang. Although the shirt is rather ridiculous, Hang hugs her for the gift, making her mother pleased.
