The villagers arrive midday and the feast begins. Hang does her duties as the "successful niece", her smile permanently fixed. By mid afternoon Hang escapes to a neighbor's home for a nap. Madame Dua wakes her at nightfall to return. Back in Aunt Tam's courtyard, sweets and sticky rice are being served. The villagers keep remarking how exquisite Aunt Tam's food is. Hang is introduced to everyone as the guest of honor. She is finally introduced to the hated Mr. Duong. He is a short, pudgy middle-aged man with puckering lips. He tells Aunt Tam that he has a favor to ask of her. Hang notices the woman with the scar is crouched in a corner watching the scene.
