Chapter 5 Summary
As a child, Hang is nervous and on edge when she returns to the village with her mother. She has to follow customs and etiquette she is not familiar with. On her first morning, Hang goes out to explore and collect ripe guavas. She sees an old street vendor with dirty feet and Que tells her that she is the daughter of a woman who was just like her. Hang worries that in ten years, she will be just like her mother. Later, Que bathes and washes Hang and dresses her up to meet her Aunt Tam. They go to her house and are greeted by an old woman, Madame Dua, who remarks how much Hang looks like her father. Madame Dua leads them into a large courtyard.
