Hang's mother describes her past and being so lonely in her father's house. She would clean the house and tend the garden but most of her life was spent in silence. At night, she would listen to her neighbors eating dinner with their families, which would make her cry. Que was considered the most beautiful woman in the village at twenty years old. After a year alone, she met Ton who had transferred to the village as a teacher to help care for his ailing mother.
