Mei Ling

Mei Ling is a young Chinese woman whose family had to leave the city they lived in to move to the ancestral village due to political strife and poverty. Since her sister was too ill to get married to Kai Li Chin, found for the family by a matchmaker, Mei Ling is married off to him instead in order to increase her family's fortunes and lighten their financial burdens. She thus becomes an adopted mother to Bo, who is three years old, and must get to know her new husband through a web of lies, such as the fact that she is not her sister and not a Rabbit sign, but rather is a Dragon sign.

Mei Ling's husband, Kai Li, is taking her and Bo to the United States where he lives, thus the trio board a ship and travel to San Francisco. Along the way...
