London

London is Mia's hometown. It is where she met her husband and where their marriage fell apart. She is miserable in London. When she goes back there, it is a personal defeat.

San Francisco

San Francisco is Paul's hometown. He flees the city when he first starts to become famous because he is scared of the attention. Then, he refuses to come back because he says he is too afraid to fly. At the end of the novel, however, he agrees to come back home, which is where he feels he belongs.
