Act 2, Part 3 Summary
The sparse settings for the Webb and Gibbs homes are removed and benches are set up for the wedding guests as the Stage Manager speaks to the audience about how weddings in Grover's Corners are plain and short. He adds that he is to play the minister, and that the guests are not the only witnesses to this wedding - everyone in the world is a witness, he says, to the ancient human tradition of living two by two.
Wedding guests, including the Gibbs, the Webbs and Mrs. Soames, arrive and take their seats. Mrs. Webb comments to the audience that she does not know why she is crying, that Emily cried at breakfast, and that she believes it is downright cruel to send young girls unprepared into marriage. She adds that she wants to say something to her daughter, but could not bring herself to do so, the implication...
