Summary

On the ferry, Jacob and Karen are both quiet, and Jacob is reading a Star Wars book whilst eating MacDonald’s. Karen eventually asks if he wants to talk about Dave, but Jacob says no. Karen goes to get some coffee, but she feels weak and ill, and worries she might collapse before she can get to the coffee bar. A ferry staff member sees her struggling and asks if she needs assistance. He is kind, and she tells him she has a problem with her legs. He fetches the coffee for her, pays for it himself, and takes her back to her seat, commenting that Jacob is cute. Karen tells Jacob that it “freaks her out” (134) that he doesn’t want to talk about Dave to which Jacob responds by asking "why" (135) without looking up from his book. Karen says he is...
