Summary

In Chapter 25, Eliza remains in her room after John's announcement, and Mrs. Boylston eventually calls the doctor who diagnoses Eliza with “a touch of melancholia” (215). The doctor says it is fairly common in young woman who are not married. Cassie reveals that John is leaving aboard the ship named the Ranger. Eliza and Cassie go to the Whipple house where they find John delivering guns. Eliza assures Colonel Whipple she will not tell Robert about the guns. Cassie later packs food for Isaac and John, and Eliza delivers it to the shipyard, taking the opportunity to apologize to John. Cassie and Eliza are on the pier when the Ranger departs. Eliza cries freely and is surprised to see John is still on the pier when the ship has sailed away.
