Eugene Wrayburn visits Jenny Wren's doll store and tries to buy a doll, but she won't sell one to him. She also implies she won't tell him where Lizzie Hexam is, locks up the shop and leaves. Wrayburn goes to his friend, Mortimer Lightwood. Mortimer says that Riah has come to see him. Wrayburn says that he is still trying to find Lizzie, by any means possible. They walk back home, and they pass a haggard looking man. Mortimer later says the man will haunt him in his dreams.

In Chapter 11, Bradley Headstone cannot sleep that night, as he feels murderous towards Eugene Wrayburn. He goes to check Wrayburn's house, where he runs into Rogue Riderhood at the house, the haggard man Mortimer had seen. Headstone gives him some money, but he isn't sure of the reason yet. Still, he feels making Riderhood's acquaintance might benefit him.
