It is Mr. and Mrs. Lammle's first wedding anniversary, and they host a breakfast in celebration. Mortimer Lightwood says he tried to get in touch with Lizzie Hexam, who has vanished.

In Book 3, A Long Lane: Chapter 1, Riah goes to see Mr. Fledgeby, and makes a payment to him. Alfred Lammle comes to talk to Fledgeby. Podsnap has written a letter to the Lammles, telling them to stay away from Georgiana Podsnap. When Lammle leaves, Fledgeby gets Riah to admit he's the one who has taken away Lizzie Hexam, and knows Eugene Wrayburn has a fondness for the girl. Fledgeby is pleased to hear this.
