Fledgeby is a evil man, who has not done much with his life. Alfred Lammle goes to talk to him about their plan to trick Georgiana out of their money. In Chapter 6, Mortimer Lightwood and Eugene Wrayburn are sitting together in Eugene's office. They laugh and joke about their office space and its amenities. Mortimer says he knows Eugene is withholding something from him. Eugene says he cannot tell him what he has in mind. Bradley Headstone comes with Charley Hexam and speaks with them about Lizzie Hexam. Charley says he and Bradley are wondering why Eugene is paying for Lizzie's education. Charley is upset; because he believes Bradley would be a better teacher. Charley leaves, and Eugene says he hadn't considered Bradley. Eugene realizes Bradley has feelings for Lizzie.
