Chapter 26 Summary

Conrad is still with his grandparents. He had a date with Jeanine the night before, and all seems right with the world. He is reading the newspaper when he suddenly comes across an obituary for his friend from the mental hospital, Karen. She has committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. Conrad is stunned, sickened, and can hardly move. He tells his grandparents that he doesn't feel well and is going up to bed.

Conrad remembers times at the hospital with Karen; he recalls how much they had enjoyed each other's company. After falling asleep and having bad dreams about treatments he received at the hospital, he jerks awake. He cannot fall back asleep, so he goes for a walk. He is stopped by a police officer, who questions him about why he is out.....
