Chapter 5 Summary

Conrad has his first visit with Dr. Berger, whose office has just been ransacked. They talk for a bit, and Conrad tells Dr. Berger that he is only there to see him because he has been forced to make the appointment. Conrad explains that he was in a mental hospital for eight months after his attempted suicide.

Dr. Berger is lighthearted and easy to talk with, and in spite of his initial panic, Conrad begins to feel comfortable. He has written on his patient background form that he has no brothers and sisters. Dr. Berger asks him about this information to confirm that it is true, and Conrad does not admit that he once had a brother.
