Chapter 4 Summary

Cal and Beth meet for lunch. Cal recalls how they fell in love and thinks about how beautiful Beth remains to him. Beth wants to go to London for Christmas, as they have traveled every Christmas for years. However, Cal thinks it would be better to stay home, and they have an argument about the decision. He believes that if they hadn't gone to Florida last Christmas, "it" wouldn't have happened. Beth says they shouldn't blame themselves.

Later, Cal meets with Ray, his law partner. Ray questions whether Conrad should be swimming, and if he is really ready to take on so much. Cal wonders how Ray could possibly have an opinion about the matter, since everything in Ray's life seems so perfect. Here, we finally learn that Conrad was admitted to a mental.....
