Summary

Chapter 3, entitled “Wednesday,” takes place on the Wednesday of Riggle’s suspension. Riggle awakes from a nightmare where he was trapped in a strange, repeating pattern. Riggle thinks about Remote’s Wednesday story. In the story, the people of Earth aspire to catch the sun. Remote approached Wed, who was very talented at catching things. Wed held an arrow and pointed it at the sun, claiming to have caught it. He proved his claim by pointing the arrow at the sun even when the sun was behind the planet. Also, the sun always rose exactly when Wed’s arrow showed that it would. Remote named the third day Wednesday, with the extra N-E standing for Wed’s never-ending task of holding the arrow. Riggle goes to take a shower, and he makes up a story about shampoo. He imagines a distant planet of giants...
