Summary

It is the next summer and both the narrator and his brother are working in order to support their father’s slowing business. One day the narrator meets his brother out behind the grocery store where his brother is working and takes a few items he has stolen from the store for them. The narrator would normally be working at that time as well, helping an old lady in their neighborhood organize her miscellania, but their dad was not able to give him a ride to work.

The narrator returns to their apartment complex and goes to the pool where he finds three residents of the complex: Sandy, Amelia, and Mr. Aguilar. Sandy and Amelia are both women in their late twenties who live a floor below the narrator’s family, and Mr. Aguilar lives next door. Mr. Aguilar calls the narrator over and...
