Summary

On December 12, Laurie complains about how tired she is with her work at the hotel and tells readers about the toll her father’s heart attack has taken on him and her mother. She has been looking for a present for her brother. Then she runs into Jack who is looking for a present for Sarah.

The point of view changes to Jack’s. He takes Laurie to an antique emporium that he used to go to with his father to look for Sarah’s present. The place impresses Laurie, and they find a present. Jack offers to buy her a beer to thank her for her help. He thinks she needs to talk to someone. He expects her to refuse his offer, but she accepts. They go to a pub he knows.
