Chapter 1 Summary and Analysis

Torey reads an article about a six-year-old girl who burned a three-year-old boy after tying him to a tree. As she reads the article, she has a premonition that this child will resurface in her life. Torey is a special education teacher. The school district in which she teaches refers to the special education room as the "garbage class". Torey's class is comprised of all the children that do not meet typical classification and are not wanted in any other special room. A year ago Torey worked as a resource teacher helping another teacher in her classroom. Ed Somers contacted Torey to see if she would be interested in having a room of her own the following year.
