Travis is devastated by the loss of Old Yeller. He cannot eat or sleep or cry. He feels empty and hurt. Travis thinks of all the things Old Yeller did for the family. Mama tries to make him feel better by talking about it, but Travis still feels dead inside. Lisbeth points out that the speckled pup is part Old Yeller but Travis thinks that the speckled pup did not save all of their lives and then get shot like he did not mean anything.
