Philip arrives in Paris and meets the massiere of the school he is to attend. The woman is British and does all she can to continue a proper British lifestyle while living in Paris. The woman takes him to the school and introduces Philip to a student she hopes will guide Philip in his first few classes. This student, Fanny Price, is an unpleasant young woman who has many opinions on art that she is not afraid to force on Philip. At first Philip is happy for her help, as she gives him many tips on how to improve his technique. That first day Philip also meets several other students, including two men named Lawson and Clutton. Fanny disapproves of these men because they appear to not take their art seriously, but Philip.....
