Summary

1. The next morning, after the rain subsides, Mitchell watches as a Coast Guard boat navigates floodwaters and debris, urging those who were not in any danger to stay where they are. Narration comments that “the waters of the flood were upon the earth” (161). Jane wakes up and hurriedly gets dressed as Mitchell checks his supplies, which include a transistor radio. He turns it on, and is amazed to hear the consequences of the storm described so calmly. After Jane has dressed, she says she wants to go home and collect her computer. Mitchell continues to make plans to leave, taking some of the money out of his freezer. Jane sees what he is planning (including using the canoe to leave), and tries to talk him out of it. He tells her that it may take a long time for them...
