Chapters 17 through 20 Summary

In chapter seventeen, Jem and Spider hear a helicopter and wonder if it's searching for them and whether it has the ability to detect their body heat. They decide they need to move again, even without a light, and set out, stumbling along until they find a herd of cows. Jem is afraid of them but Spider assures her the cows can't climb and the two of them get up on some hay bales in a barn. Spider then creates a cavern by moving hay bales around and they plan to go inside to hide. Jem is overcome by the smell of Spider's body odor and goes back outside when it begins to rain.
