Chapters 5 through 8 Summary

In chapter five, Jem returns to class, but Spider has been suspended for three weeks for fighting. Over the following days, Jem is teased at school about Spider having stood up for her. She spends a great deal of energy trying to avoid him but says it's as if they were "meant to be together." One afternoon she is in town when an older man bumps into her, asks her for some change, and then walks off. In the brief encounter, Jem notes the man's date of death. While her attention is on the old man, Spider catches up with her. Jem asks what the date is and Spider confirms the date is the same date Jem saw as the old man's date of death.
