A gorgeous, historic city in Denmark, during World War II, Copenhagen stood as one of the last remaining centers of culture where people could travel to and enjoy, assuming they were able to obtain the requisite travel papers from the German government. The city's spirit of freedom was such that, even under German occupation, life remained much closer to normal than in other German-occupied countries. Certainly the king's voluntary surrender prevented much death and destruction, but the country never really surrendered in spirit.
