Part 3, Chapter 9 Summary

Sotillo's goals are disappointed. He has not conquered the city or secured the silver. Pedro and his followers want to take over the harbor and want to meet privately with Sotillo. Sotillo tries to avoid surrender while still searching for the silver. He pretends to be sick and sends for Dr. Monygham in order to learn more about where the silver may be hidden.

Sotillo arranges a meeting with the doctor at the Custom House. He also turns to Hirsch in search of more information. He orders Hirsch tortured and Hirsch's screams are heard throughout the building. In a burst of anger, Sotillo shoots and kills Hirsch. He lies to his troops, telling them that Hirsch made a full confession. The soldiers and Sotillo leave. The soldiers think that Sotillo is taking.....
