Upon waking, Nostromo curses his fate, and particularly, his loyalty to an upper class that cares nothing for him. He regrets that he has worked so hard for those who could never appreciate him and who take his services for granted. Nostromo approaches the town cautiously, as he is unarmed and clothed in rags. He enters the damaged Custom House and happens to meet Dr. Monygham. Nostromo thinks that there is someone in the building, and the two men discover Hirsch's dead body in one of the rooms. Nostromo is resentful that Dr. Monygham is not concerned about the silver, for which Nostromo almost died. Dr. Monygham counts on Nostromo as a faithful servant to be used to save the silver mine.
