Charles Gould returns to the silver mine in order to bring a shipment of six months' worth of silver to the harbor. He and his wife have an emotional conversation in which he assures her that he will do whatever is necessary to save the mine.
Decoud and Mrs. Gould discuss a telegraph that Decoud has just received about a defeat of Ribiera forces some weeks earlier. Decoud tells her about his plans for the separation of Occidental Province from Costaguana. He argues that his love for Antonia keeps him in Sulaco and that Sulaco must become independent. Decoud asks for Gould's support because of the silver mine and his overall influence in the area. He thinks they can also recruit Hernandez, a well-known bandit, to help. He also reassures Mrs. Gould.....
