XXXVI-XL Summary

Margaret and Mr. Hale meet Nicholas on the street. He tells them he is still out of work. Margaret asks if it is because of the strike, and he says the strike is over and he has not looked for anymore work. The conversation turns to the union and Nicholas' dislike of Boucher. As he is talking, six men walk past carrying a dead man on an unhinged door. The man is Boucher. One of the men asks Nicholas if Nicholas will break the news to Boucher's wife, but Nicholas says he is not up to the task. Margaret says she will tell her and heads for the widow's house. Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Boucher faints. The Hales go back to Nicholas' house and he refuses to let them in, saying he needs.....
