Summary

In Chapter 28, when Ava gets home, Sylvia tells her she is being trashy for being pregnant with a man’s child while sleeping with another man. Sylvia tells Ava that Ava and JJ do not love one another, and that JJ is another sad sack she cannot help. Ava explains she is tired and is going to sleep.

In Chapter 29, Lana goes to work at her salon which caters to blacks, “Hair-apy”, though the place is simply known locally as “Lana’s”. Sylvia comes in to see Lana, saying she feels as if she has wasted her life. Sylvia asks Lana what their mother ever saw in their father.
