Chapter 9 Summary
On the day of the funeral, Ichiro's father is almost happy, impressed with how many people give him their condolences. Ichiro feels much of the ceremony is phony as many of the attendants did not know his mother. The priest is a bald man with small, dark eyes which do not seem sympathetic, and a voice too high to be a mourning sound.
As Ichiro and his father wait in the limousine, Ichiro feels the whole ceremony is a waste of time, jumps out of the car and gets in another car with his old friend, Freddie. Freddie tells Ichiro that he stabbed Ito in the backside, so Ito and his friends are pursuing him.
Back at the store, Ichiro is alone, thinking about how his mother alienated herself from him and his brother. Emi arrives to tell him how sorry she is to hear about his mother's death. She...
