Chapter 8 Summary
Ichiro's father begins to drink heavily, and his mother seems to finally lose her senses completely. In his deep depression, Ichiro's father opens his mouth and pours as much whiskey down his throat as possible before passing out. Ichiro arrives at his parents' grocery store, but cannot make himself go in, so drives to Kenji's house to return the car. There Kenji's father tells him that Kenji died at three o'clock that afternoon.
When Ichiro arrives at the store, he finds his mother has drowned herself in the bathtub. He remembers her as one who tried to give him pleasure but made the mistake of trying to keep him Japanese in an America for Americans. As Ichiro turns on the light to call the coroner, he finds his father passed out and roughly shakes him awake, but the old man doesn't comprehend what his son tells him and falls back...
