Chapter 5 Summary
When Ichiro arrives home he argues with his mother once more. A letter arrives from her sister whom she has not heard from for a long time. Ichiro's father reads it and it paints a very bleak picture of life in Japan after the war. Ichiro is glad he is going to Portland, and feels that he must get away from his parents and the past which they represent and get on with his own life. Ichiro then argues with his father, telling him that he ruined his life for his parents and for Japan. His father is portrayed as being neither husband, father, Japanese, nor American.
Chapter 5 Analysis
Ichiro's family is pictured as difficult as they are neither parents, children, Japanese, nor Americans. Ichiro shows little respect for either of his parents, says his brother is a fool for going into the army, and feels he ruined his life for them...
